Rates Lowest Statewide
In the “2004 Georgia Water and Wastewater Rate Survey,” which surveys the combined water and wastewater rates throughout the state of Georgia, Dalton Utilities' rates were – once again – the lowest in the state. The survey reflects rates that were effective through July 2004. Black & Veatch surveyed municipal water and wastewater utilities for cities with populations of 10,000 or greater. The survey revealed that the average water and wastewater bill in Georgia (for 7,500 gallons of use) was $49.02. Dalton Utilities reported an average bill of $20.05, which was 13% lower than the second lowest bill.
The survey also noted a nationwide trend toward more stringent regulations. Water and wastewater utilities have increased rates to pay for the rapidly escalating costs of providing safe drinking water and environmentally acceptable wastewater sludge and effluent. Georgia utilities typify this trend. However, Dalton Utilities has chosen to be proactive rather than reactive on regulatory issues. The utility is currently in the process of expanding its wastewater treatment capacity, which will enable the utility to handle stricter regulatory standards without requiring further expansion or conversion of its facilities.
