Electricity: How Shocking!

Where does electricity come from? Dalton Utilities gets its energy from hydroelectric power and coal- and nuclear-powered plants. But how does it get to your house? The diagram below traces the path of electricity from its creation to your home.

1) Turbines spin giant magnets inside a coil of wire. Electrons in the wire start to move in response to the magnet's pull.

2) A Step-up Transformer raises the pressure of the electricity so it can travel long distances

3) Transmission Lines carry the electricity over long distances.

How Power Reaches Your Home

4) A Substation lowers the pressure so the electricity can be used by the community.

5) Distribution Lines carry electricity throughout neighborhoods.

6) A Pole Transformer lowers the pressure once again. In places where lines are underground, a transformer box may be used instead.

7) A Service Box brings electricity into your home.
