What makes OptiLink different?
The engine that powers data down OptiLink’s fiber optic highway is Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) protocol. This protocol is highly efficient over fiber optic cable, which is superior to copper wire, which is used as backbone for many of the nation’s telecommunication and Internet systems. Even the best copper systems can’t prevent against static, which is the enemy of data. With ATM-driven fiber, data corruption is dramatically reduced and virtually eliminated.
One reason ATM is so much more efficient is that older protocols—like Sonet, Frame Relay, and SDH—sends data as entire files. The files move along, but if one packet is corrupted, the entire file must be sent again. That slows down the entire network.
ATM, on the other hand, divides files into small portions or packets. If data corruption occurs in a small portion of the file, ATM technology allows only that small portion to be resent rather than the entire file. Therefore, with ATM, information is constantly moving.
